Description

LanguageTool is a style and grammar proofreading software for English, French, German, and many other languages. You can think of LanguageTool as a software to detect errors that a simple spell checker cannot detect, e.g. mixing up there/their, no/now etc. It can also detect some grammar mistakes.

Supported languages are: Asturian, Belarusian, Breton, Catalan, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Esperanto, French, Galician, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Khmer, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Tamil, Ukrainian. Please note that the level of support differs a lot between languages.

NOTE: Starting with LibreOffice 7.4, LanguageTool can be used from LibreOffice without this add-on. However, there are some reasons to use the extension:

  • The extension runs on the local machine. No remote server is needed.
  • The extension supports all rules working on the level of full text (e.g., opening and closing quotes are recognized even if they are more than one paragraph away from each other).
  • The extension automatically adds all lists of correctly spelled words (according to LanguageTool) to the dictionaries used by LibreOffice.
  • The extension supports grammar checking of Impress and Calc documents (Only manual checking by the LT check dialog. An automated check is not supported by LibreOffice.)
  • The extension offers a configuration dialog:
    • Easily activate / deactivate optional rules
    • Easily deactivate / reactivate default rules
    • Define custom colors and styles for rule groups or single rules
    • Change parameters for some special rules
    • Define profiles to check different kinds of documents

If you have trouble with the installation, please see our checklist.

You can always get the latest version of this add-on at https://languagetool.org/download/LanguageTool-stable.oxt - the version linked here at extensions.libreoffice.org might not be up-to-date.

Did not work even after installing java from Java.com instead of using OpenJDK

    So far, so good.
I did install JAVA from java.com and had no further issues. Guess the main issue is the use of openJDK versus Java.com

EN: It seems to be working alright, but just as Javier Rondon said, the only working version for LO 7.0+ is 4.1.

I tried the latest LanguageTool (5.2.2), and even though I can install it just fine, the service cannot start inside LO, it gives me a "LanguageTool can not start" message popup.

Hopefully, the next LO update will work with it, otherwise, I hope it can be fixed on LT's side.

When using the LanguageTool LibreOffice Writer freezes. Needed to remove the extension to make it work well again.
Running LibreOffice Version 7.0.3.1 on openSUSE Tumbleweed, Kernel Version 5.10.5, KDE Plasma 5.20.5

We have more or less the same set-up, try by substituting the java versions.

Thank you for your hint! It set me on the right track to fix the problem. In fact, I had ignored the asterisk on the website: https://languagetool.org/#plugins. It says that the add-on requires Java 8! So, I have installed “java-1_8_0-openjdk” from the openSUSE Tumbleweed repository. Then I have ticketed the right Java version in Tools – Options – Advanced – Java Options and have restarted LibreOffice. Now, it works like a charm without freezing any more. I am glad that I was not obliged to mix repositories because I made bad experience in the past.

Extension freezes the system, the changes made are not saved. On time there was a Java error (LT version 5.1.3). Reason to remove the extension again.
Besides the crashes the extension did the job for the Dutch language spelling an grammar as expected.
Running Linux Mint 20 and LO Version: 6.4.6.2 - Build ID: 1:6.4.6-0ubuntu0.20.04.1

Pisząc wierszem, dodatek na końcu każdego wersu sugeruje kropkę, co jest błędem i nonsensem.

Does what it says on the tin. For some reason I could not find it with the search option on the extensions website. But the Language Tool website has a link.

It was much harder than it should be to find out that one needs to install this extension. Downloading it was slow and installation was somewhat non-intutive. And then I find that when I finally get the thing to run - and, er, not run multiple simultaneous copies of the proofing window - it has dropped the proofing window out of HiDPI and is too small to read.

This is like the bad old days of Linux. It's disastrous. I will have to uninstall the edition to make any type of proofing within Libre Office usable.

I am on Mint Cinnamon with LibreOffice 6.4.6.2.
