WritingTool
WritingTool a writing assistant for LibreOffice
Spell, style and grammar checking based on LanguageTool (25+ Languages), optimized for large
latest release: 2024-12-17 07:17:24
Description
WritingTool extends LibreOffice's text editing functionality with a writing assistant. It is designed for creating and editing extensive texts (e.g., for literature, science, and business). WritingTool offers the following functionality:
- Automatic style and grammar checking in the background, based on LanguageTool (25+ Languages):
- The application runs on the local computer. Therefore, no remote server is required (the use of a remote server, including the LanguageTool Premium service, is still supported).
- All rules that work at the full-text level are also supported across paragraph boundaries (e.g., opening and closing quotation marks are recognized even if they are more than one paragraph apart).
- An internal caching mechanism is used, which significantly speeds up repeated work on long texts (checking unchanged texts does not have to be repeated, which is time-consuming. After loading a text that has already been checked once, all errors found are displayed almost immediately).
- A configuration dialog allows users to make individual settings, for example:
- Easily activate or deactivate optional rules
- Easily deactivate or reactivate default rules
- Define custom colors and styles for rule groups or individual rules
- Change parameters for some special rules
- Define profiles for checking different document types
- For manual checks, a separate WritingTool check dialog is available:
- It is powerful and fast (It has been optimized for WritingTool's internal caching mechanisms).
- Manual grammar and style checking of Impress and Calc documents using the WritingTool check dialog is supported.
-
Statistical analysis of texts to obtain tips on improving writing style:
- The extension offers the possibility of statistical analyses, such as frequently used words, filler words, etc. (currently only for some languages).
-
AI support for automatic background checks, manual editing of paragraphs, creation of texts and illustrations (Access to an AI server is required).
WritingTool works on the local computer by default. A network connection is not necessary. Optionally, access to a network server is supported for all functions.
Note: WritingTool does not come with its own AI.
If you want to use AI support, access to an AI API is necessary. Please read the requirements.
Note: AI support is currently only experimental and only tested for local installations of localAI (for further background, see here).
If you have trouble with the installation, please see the requirements.

Works way better than language tools did. Few random crashes of Libre office when hoping around in my 150 plus pages of novel to edit and insert lines, Doesn't happen without hopping around. Loses star because I cannot actually get the experimental ai feature to connect to web api and there is no documentation yet.

Very frustrating software. The problem is not even that it's buggy - Java errors, errors connecting to AI server. The problem is it is so poorly documented and the communication is so unfriendly.
In the docs, you will not find a step-by-step instruction on how to actually get the checking done - just some abstract discussions about "what is supported".
Errors that pop up - no wind on how to fix them.
Connecting to AI server errors and tells you to "go see the log file", which, obviously, is nowhere to be found, and nowhere documented.
Frustrating experience.

The extension does not work under Windows 11 x64. I am getting always Java-errors. I tried Oracle Java 18 and Eclipse 21.x. The snapshots are not better.

A great replacement for my (ageing, unmaintained) local LanguageTool extension. I'm a big fan of the LanguageTool service, but it's important to also have the option of a local-first, offline checker such as WritingTool.
